Children who participate in a high quality early childhood education program are more ready for school, more likely to go on to further education and to be employed at a higher wage. The recently released Lifting Our Game report, commissioned by all states and territories, evidences that participation in quality early childhood education improves school readiness and lifts NAPLAN results and PISA scores.
We know that 1 in 5 children are not ready when they start school, and this gap only gets worse when children enter the workforce. Over 44% of Australian adults having literacy and/or numeracy skills below the minimum level to operate effectively in workplaces and society (OECD, 2016).
High quality early childhood education is linked with higher levels of employment, income and financial security, improved health outcomes and reduced crime. It is essential in building the skills children will need for the jobs of the future.
Future workforce participants will need to be active problem solvers and communicators of ideas. It is predicted that in 2030, workers will spend twice as much time solving problems, 77% more time using science and maths skills and 17% more time using verbal communication and interpersonal skills. In order to thrive in the workplaces of the future, today’s children will need to develop high level cognitive and emotional skills, as well as the ability to deploy these skills in an enterprising way.
